What Road Salt and Grime Does to Your Door Lock

The item on the left is a replacement key cylinder plug for a door lock found on many late model Chevrolet and GMC trucks.  The protruding wafers need to move freely up and down when the key is inserted. The one on the right is from a vehicle were the door lock no longer worked due to a heavy buildup of salt and corrosion.  Notice that these wafers cannot move, making it impossible for the key to operate the lock.  Often in these situations, we will remove the wafers, clean the lock and get the key working again. At other times it better to replace the whole door lock assembly.
